British Christianity - Declining or Sleeping?

3,000 saved at Pentecost

The following is an interesting article on the condition, the health of Christianity, in the UK, from a UK newspaper, the Telegraph.

Link to article:  Link.

Some key points of the article:

What Changed to Re-ignite Christianity in the 19th Century?

A few factors, but in a word, evangelism, that is, revival.
"That’s what’s missing from 21st century British Christianity: evangelisation. The only people you’ll see doing it in the streets are the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Scientologists." (article.)
Anglicans, Baptists (Charles Spurgeon), Methodists, turned the UK around by treating the UK as if it were by all intents and purposes, as near pagan, launching crusades and missions around the UK to bring the faith to the people.

Social justice, alcoholism, such things were seen as tools of religious missions.  Which is the correct attitude.  We help people by getting them saved.  When people get saved, with the Holy Spirit living inside them, social justice, social ills, alcoholism, the poor, immoral living, these things take care of themselves:  People 1.  Want to give it up sinful ways of living, and 2.  Help others who are in difficult situations.

A second thing that happened, was, that Christianity became somewhat popular with the middle class *(I would like to add a note to this, at the end of the article).

Where are we now?

We know from the Bible, from the Old Testament, that, people being people, fall away from the faith.  It is our sinful nature.

So, once again we find ourselves in a similar situation as shown in the Bible, today, the 21st century, as shown in 18th-19th century.  People have turned away, to worship other gods.  Today that's celebrities, money, fame, 'selfies', expensive clothes, modern gadgets.  Some of the tools, some of the devices that people desire and worship have changed, but, it's not really that much different.  People go 'a whoring after other gods' (Judges 2:17).

Where we are is exactly where we've been before.  People think that the life saving, life changing message of the Gospel is no longer 'relevant', the churches and the people have a disconnect.  Church goers are predominantly middle class, with no real idea what is going on in the world.

For many church goers, sadly, the only time they come across a disadvantaged individual, a person down on their luck, is at a social work meeting, or in a court, where they are working.  Not getting to know or have an insight into daily life of so many people.

The Solution

The solution is just as it's always been, through the wisdom of the Gospel.  God tells us how to solve this.  Through preaching, through reaching the lost through any means.  Soulwinning
For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 1 Corinthians 1:21
And where should we preach? As the Lord said,
“And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” Luke 14:23
The Apostle Paul?
“And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house,” Acts 20:20
The Lord's commandment,
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Mark 16:15

Where are these places?

As the Bible says, they're the highways and hedges, house to house, all the world.  Where is all the world?  All the world is everywhere!

The person you meet in a shop, the taxi driver taking you on your journey.  The internet, places, circumstances.  All these places are the world.  We are to preach the Gospel EVERYWHERE!

And to whom?  To ALL CREATURES.  That's the homeless person, the down and out, the drunk, the addict.  That's the single man, the single woman.  That's the ones with families, the ones without.  That's the rich, the educated, the working person, the unemployed, the old, the young, the middle aged, the common man.

That is, we are to preach the Gospel EVERYWHERE to EVERY type of person!

We are to preach to EVERYONE, and EVERYWHERE, that Jesus, the only Begotten Son of God, died on the cross for our sins, that He was buried, and bodily rose on the third day, paying a price He did not owe because we never could, and, by believing on His sacrifice on the cross, through faith and faith alone, for forgiveness of our sins, that we too shall have eternal life though the Lord Jesus Christ!

The Lord has the answers, and we have them in the Holy Bible.

Glory to God!

A Word About End Times

To my knowledge, a difference with the decline in Christianity now, compared to other times in New Testament history, is that, the Christians that remain, are very often wealthy, increased with goods.  I cannot help but think of how Revelation advises us of how things would be towards the end times, the end of the church age.

As the Lord says to the church,
"Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:" Revelation 3:17
Nevertheless, the Lord also says later in the chapter,
"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelation" 3:20
Here the Lord is speaking not just to the church, but to the individual.  The Lord stands at the door, and knock. If any man hear His voice, and open the door, He will come in, and sup with him, and he with the Lord.

It may very well be that we are at the end times, but, that is not for us to decide.  God has furnished us with the tools that we need, in order to preach the Gospel, and to have revival.  The Lord stands at the door, and knocks, for you, for me, for us all.

Let us preach the Gospel, let us have revival, and in doing so, save peoples eternal destiny, and in doing so, we can be ready for the returning of the Lord, as a good and faithful servant.
"Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods."  Matthew 24:45-47

The Holy Cross
* As far as i'm aware, Christianity has not typically been the purvey of the middle class.  It may be that this is the difference, that we are approaching the end times.  As Christianity adopts (and in many places), adopted middle class values, and approaches, it then leads to become compromised - a part of the world.

Men of God, preachers like John the Baptist, did not fit into the world, we are to live in the world, but not be of the world (Romans 12:2).  The Gospel is to be preached to all creatures, the rich and the poor.  The message of Christ, the Bible, looses it's saving power and impact, should the message be compromised, and diluted, to apparently hopefully crowdplease, for then we are not true to the Word, people don't experience conviction, God may withdraw His blessing, to be spiritually rich.
“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”  Acts 5:29
