Ephesians Chapter 5 - Butchered

“Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22.
I heard a Church of Scotland minister, deliver a sermon in regards to Ephesians Chapter 5, specifically, concerning the equality of men and women, in everything.  Equality in role, that there is no division in responsibility in roles, in duties, and purpose, between male and female.  That historically, people used the division of labour and roles in the Bible falsely, thereby confining women to oppressive, and unbiblical servitude.

That a woman can and should do everything that a man should do.  Essentially, that gender does not exist.  The gender of male, and female, is irrelevant.
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” Genesis 2:18.
Biblically, God created man first.  Up to this time, there was only one gender.  God is male, angels are male.  God created woman, the first gender of female, to be an help meet to man.  That is, so that the first man, Adam, would not be alone, but that he would have a helper.

Does this mean that women are less important than men?

It does not!  Men and women are assigned different roles in the Bible, just as in men, different roles are assigned to them.  A church preacher is no more important than the poor Christian man who has to take the bus to church, rather than drive, 1 Cor. 12:25, “That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.

In a place of work, the manager has a different role than the employee.  It is the managers job to manage the work, to instruct the employee on what tasks to complete.  The employee's job is to complete the task.  A manager cannot function without a staff member, staff members cannot function without direction on how the business is to be run.

There are different tasks, however, this does not mean that within those tasks, that the employee is any less of a person than the employer.  They are both equal as people:  in a court of law, they both have the same human rights, the same rights to a fair trial.  The law does not give favour to someone based on their position.  Historically, even Kings were subject to their own laws.

So it is with male and female, in the EYES of God, we are equal.  A woman is no less importance than a man, however, as with the employer and the employee, we are to have different roles to fulfil.

A husband should love his wife, and a wife should love her husband

“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” Ephesians 5:33.
A husband is to love their wife, just as the wife is to love their husband.  Eph. 5:6, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;”.  Men are to love their wives, just as Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it.

A man who loves his wife, will give everything for his wife, he will give himself, his life, in order to protect his wife, and to protect his family. Christ gave everything for His bride, the church:  He is God, who humbled himself to become human, and sacrificed Himself on the cross, that through accepting His sacrifice, we can have eternal life.

Giving everything does not mean equality

Just as Christ cherishes and loves us, His people; born again believers who make up His church.  He is the head of the church. Jesus is God, we are not equal to God, Jesus is the head of the church, of that there can be, and should be no doubt whatsoever.

Just as Christ is head of the church, the Bible teaches, that a husband is the head of his wife.  Here we have the scripture in Ephesians,
“For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.” Eph. 5:23.
In the place of employment, as a manager has a different role to the employee, the husband has a different role to the wife.  God placed the husband to be the head of the wife.  When there are two people both trying to be in charge, then there is friction.  Two people can discuss, to hopefully come to the best decision, but ultimately, one person has to decide what is best.  When push comes to shove, it is the husband who calls rank.

Similar to roles in employment, roles in marriage, there are hierachies but equality in church.  The pastor tends to the flock, and given respect as a good teacher, a good pastor.  The Church pastor, although in a different position to the layman, is equal in terms of salvation, and in terms of worth.  The rich are equal to the poor, for God is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34).

Authority should not be Abused

“So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.”  — Eph 5:28
A wise and just ruler should not abuse his subjects.  An employer should not abuse his employees, but treat them with respect and fairness.  A husband should not abuse his authority over his wife, he is to love his wife as his own body, because in marriage; husband and wife, 'they two shall be one flesh' (Eph 5:31c).  It's wrong to abuse one's own flesh and blood, as it's wrong to abuse one's wife, one's husband.

Seeking Gender Equality of Roles

Not just from Ephesians, but, we can see, God has clearly established roles within the gender, between male and female.  When push comes to shove, the husband is the head of the family, the head of his wife.  A good, biblical husband will lay his life down to protect his family, his wife.

It's wrong to mis-interpret the scriptures to say that Paul speaks of equality of roles between man and woman, between husband and wife.  In fact, Paul preaches that there is a division of roles, but that the correct position is to have love, and not be some sort of cowardly wretch of a man, trying to stupidly enforce superiority through barking orders and abuse, thereby even abusing and hating himself.  So it is that a woman should expect to be treated with love by her husband, however, the woman is to give her place to her husband, submitting to his authority.

There's nothing wrong with submitting to authority.  As a child, I submitted to the authority of my parents.  Within that authority, there was love, not abuse.

Feminism is the same rope of the Devil

To play with the scriptures, to attempt to mend them into what the world wants and promotes, which is that there should be no difference in gender roles (even now, not just no difference in gender roles, but the next step, that there should be no gender), is to break down the Biblical division of roles, which God has established.

There was another who sought equality, equality of roles, and that is the great deceiver himself, Satan,
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” Isaiah 14:14
Satan did not seek to become superior to God, Satan wished to be equal to God, wickedly, to remove the hierarchy between his wicked self and Almighty God.  It is wicked, it is evil, and sadly, so it is with feminism, when one demands that, 'if a man does it, so do I!'.

This is the same philosophy of Satan, wickedly seeking equality where it is not due.

This is why we have so many divorces, so many single parents, so many children without father figures, and sadly, so many abortions, because, instead of following God's will, not just the world, but so called preachers, even preachers in the pulpit, encourage women to not follow God's will, but to follow their own will, their self will.
"So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the Lord, and went presumptuously up into the hill." Deut. 1:43
"And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king" 1 Sam. 22-23
