The Gap Fact - Dr. Gene Kim

The Bible teaches that the earth is very old, and the human race is young.

Key Points From the Presentation

There is a gap between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Genesis 1:1
Notice in Genesis 1:1, God had created the heaven and the earth.
"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." Genesis 1:2
Notice in Genesis 1:2, it begins with "And".  Therefore there is a gap.  The heaven and the earth was created in Genesis 1:1, then the earth became without form and void in Genesis 1:2

Something happened between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2; the earth became void; barren, fruitless.

Notice, in the proceeding verses in Genesis, we continue to have "And/and" for further different time periods,
"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day." Genesis 1:3-8
And so forth, throughout Genesis 1.

The Gap is Further Supported by Comparing Scripture with Scripture

Jeremiah makes a direct reference to the time in Genesis 1:1,
"I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger." Jeremiah 4:23-26
The earth existed in Genesis 1:1, but it was destroyed by the LORD in His fierce anger (Jer. 4:26).  What happened to make the Lord destroy the earth?  This was a time when Satan and the angels lived on earth, before Satan's rebellion.  It was Satan's rebellion against God which caused God to act.

The Earth is Very Old

Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.” Psalms 102:25

God's Word Never Returns Void

So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11
Further showing the gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.  Why would the earth be without form and void?  God's word does not return void.  With the word "And" at the beginning of Genesis 1:2, as shown throughout Genesis 1 for the 6 days of the remaking of the earth, and the creation of humans and the new animals, "And" is used to show each new day; each new time period; each sequential event.

This Doesn't Support Evolution

Evolution is about things evolving into more complex forms.  Note that things de-volved; they were destroyed.  The earth was rendered barren in Genesis 1:2, Jeremiah 4:23.  When God remodelled the earth, he created people, and the life that we see on it today.  There is no evolution.

When Did Satan Fall?

"And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:" Genesis 3:4
In the garden of Eden, it was the serpent, Satan, who "beguiled" Eve into sinning.  The deceit of Satan, which is sin, existed before there was sin in Eve, and in Adam.

Sin originated with Satan.  Coupled with the scriptures, and logically, the only way that sin could have existed, was before Adam and Eve existed in God's re-modelled earth.  We learn here that Satan is the father of lies (sin),
“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” John 8:44
Here we find Satan falling, when he rebelled against God,
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High."  Isaiah 14:12
Before the creation of Adam and Eve, before the earth was without form and void (Gen. 1:2), before the earth was rendered without form and void, “I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.”  (Jer. 4:23).

God Tells Adam and Eve to Replenish the Earth

"And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it:" Genesis 1:28
Note that it is not to 'plenish', or to 'fill' the earth, but it is to replenish the earth.  The earth was populated, was old, and it was rendered without form and void (Genesis 1:2), before people.  Adam and Eve were to replenish the earth; people are young, and the earth is old.
