"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." - Mark 16:15

Getting Saved is Easy ....

“And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.” 1 Mark 1:15
And it is!

We are saved simply by recognizing ourselves as guilty sinners under the eyes of a Holy God, and believing in Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, the only begotten Son of God, God in the flesh, who without sin, sacrificed Himself on the cross for us, paying a debt He did not owe, because we never could, and bodily ressurected on the third day.

That's it. We are saved, that is, guaranteed eternal life in Heaven purely, and only by, entirely by, an act of faith.  Even the vilest of sinners will be saved, if they believe on the Lord's sacrifice on the cross to pay for their sins, because the Lord didn't come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance,
I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”  Luke 5:32

Why then are so few people going to Heaven?

It's true!  It's such an easy thing, it's just a case of accepting our guilt as a sinner, and believing on the Lord's sacrifice on the cross for payment of your sins that he died to pay for your sins, was buried, and rose from the grave.  Anyone can do it, a child can do it!

God made the plan of Salvation really simple, but yet, so many people are set in their ways, set on their ways, and going to Hell in their ways.  How could this be?!

I'd like to illustrate this with a few examples.

1. Where do you put your trust? - The Nun

The first example I would like to give, is that of a Catholic Nun that I was recently conversing with.  We spoke for a while about church funding.  Apparently, her convent did not receive funds from the Catholic church, despite the Catholic church having as much money as a small country (and the Vatican is, literally, a small country).  Her convent had to raise funds on it's own.

We then moved on to discuss salvation.  Despite showing scripture after scripture, that there is no other way to Heaven than through the Lord Jesus Christ, 1 Timothy 2:5, 'For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;', that the will of the Father is that we believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, John 6:40, 'And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.'

Despite all of this, the Catholic Nun was, quite literally, hellbent, on refusing to listen to any Scripture, and instead repeated the mantra that, 'I have taken an oath that my Mother Superior (a sinful person just like me, and her), is her representative to God.'  Therefore, she is trusting in her human boss, essentially, her human manager, as her way into Heaven.  Folks, this isn't Biblical!

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." —John 14:6

Despite everything the Bible teaches, that Jesus is the ONLY way into Heaven, here we have a person who has decided, and bullheadedly decided if I may add, to place her faith instead on a fellow sinful, hopeless human being, just like me, as we ALL need Jesus's righteousness!

2.  Adding works to be saved (self-righteousness) - The Preacher

Again, I would like to use a recent example from my life, and also tie it in with what the Bible teaches us.  I was recently conversing with a man who is a street preacher.  He says lots of good things, for instance, that popular music is designed to lead us to the Devil, that fashion (clothing) is designed to lead us to the Devil, that Hell is real.  All these things are true, except, unfortunately, what he gets wrong, is repentance, and therefore, the very Gospel itself.

The man preached that we must repent our sins, then believe in Jesus.  That is, as he clarified, we must STOP sinning, and then believe in Jesus.  Furthermore, he continued, if we live in sin after we are saved, we are not saved at all.

Folks, this is plain and simple works based Salvation!  This is relying owns on self righteousness.  It is part faith, yes, but, not really faith, because, the man is STILL relying on his own human effort to 'assist', to 'enable' him to go to Heaven.  In reality, he's not trusted God at all.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

"And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:" Philippians 3:9

The fellow then proceeded to support his heresy by claiming that Lot, because Lot had sinned, is now in Hell.  Once again, this is completely contrary to Biblical teaching,

"And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 8(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)" 2 Peter 2:7

It's true, Lot did live in sin, Lot did present a poor testimony, however, thankfully for him, and you and me!  Lot was not saved because of good deeds. The Bible, as showin the above Scripture, describes Lot as a just man, as a righteous man, because, as the Bible teaches, his FAITH was counted as righteousness.

3.  Refusing to Believe, even although the person acknowledges it is easy

I have spoke to quite a few people, who have listened to the Gospel, and then rejected it, because of reasons which typically run along the lines of, 'it's too easy', 'it can't be that easy', and so forth.

This comes from a number of reasons, sometimes it is just that they do not believe anyway.  Sometimes it is disbelief mixed with the inability to accept ones own depravity, that is, that we have no righteousness of our own, that even one sin in our life, in the eyes of a Holy God, makes us guilty of ALL sin, James 2:10, 'For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.'

That is, they make the decision not to accept their lack of righteousness, preferring instead to establish their own righteousness.

“For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” Romans 10:3

Please note that people have the ability to CHOOSE whether to believe or not, or CHOOSE whether to accept their sinful condition or not.

A note on repentance

Repentance in the New Testament, in the Biblical sense, is the Greek word, metanoeō, which means, to change one's mind, i.e. to repent, that is, to think differently,

Strongs Definition (Link)
μετανοέω metanoéō
, met-an-o-eh'-o; from G3326 and G3539; to think differently or afterwards, i.e. reconsider (morally, feel compunction):—repent

What is it, that we are to change our minds from?  It is to change it from whatever it is that is stopping us from accepting the Lord's sacrifice, at Calvary, on the cross, for payment of our sins!

For some people, that's changing their mind, from NOT believing, TO believing.
For some people, that's changing their mind, from NOT accepting their guilt as sinners, TO accepting their guilt as sinners.
For some people, that's changing their mind, from THINKING one can save oneself, TO realizing one can't save oneself!
For others, that's changing their mind, FROM trusting, their Priest, Minister, Pastor, Superior, TO trusting the Lord!

It's easy to Go to Heaven, yet so few people ACCEPT the Gift.

As much of the refusal of God's gift comes from disbelief, as it does from refusal to accept one's own complete lack of self-righteousness, to therefore accepting that we NEED a Saviour, that we CAN'T save ourselvses.  Letting go of that pride, accepting our helplessness, prevents many.

Despite people so often acknowledging that Salvation is EASY, it's still, sadly, a bridge too far for them to accept.

Trying to Buy our way into Heaven

Despite people's best efforts, no matter how much they try, trusting 'important' people (Pastors, businessmen, Priests, Popes), trusting their good works, trusting their perservering in good works as a CONDITION of Salvation, doesn't cut it, because, they are rejecting the payment of Christ on the cross as their only way to Heaven, and indeed, we are bought with a price, His price.
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber."
—John 10:1
