"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature." - Mark 16:15

God Rewards Labours, Not Methods

1st Corinthians 3:7-8, “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.”

Which one produces the most reward?  A billionnaire writing a cheque (check in US English) for 1,000,000 to a charity for the poor, or an individual who labours by going out and helping the poor?  In terms of the world, one would say the former, but in terms of God, it is the latter.  The first one is just a fraction of the billionnaires money, and indeed, time, the second one is a high burden on a regular persons money, time, and effort.  God rewards our Labours.

Sometimes in life it can feel that your labours are not bearing fruit.  Sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming.  Putting in so much work for what seems like little return, maybe you are thinking that if you had such and such resources you could do more?  Well it might be true that with more money, more people, more exposure you could achieve more, but in terms of rewards in Heaven, if we look at the scripure above - it's our efforts, our labours that the Lord rewards.

Please don't misunderstand me.  I'm not referring to salvation, but to rewards.  We receive salvation, not through works, but by faith alone (Romans 4:5).  All the works in the world without faith will achieve nothing in terms of even getting into Heaven, because we are all sinners, and require God's grace by believing in Jesus for the forgiveness of sins.  What we can do though, as born again believers, ie recognising ourselves as guilty sinners, and believing in Jesus, the only begotten Son of God, who without sin, died on the cross and was bodily risen, so that our sins may be washed away, is to lay up treasures in Heaven.

In the scripture in Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus is telling us, that as born again believers, we can lay up treasures for ourselves - lay up rewards in Heaven, by doing good works.

Matthew 6:19-21, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:"

Here is a list of some of the things we can do as born again believers, children of God, to get rewards in Heaven

Winning Souls to Jesus Christ (John 4:36).
Serving Those Who Preach and Go Soul-winning (Matthew 10:42; Mark 9:41).
Enduring Persecution, Rejection and Being Lied About for Christ (Matthew 5:11; Luke 6:22-23; Revelation 2:10).
Giving to the Work of the Lord (Philippians 4:15).
Giving to the Lord's work (i.e., a missionary, preacher, prophet, soul-winner).
Giving Alms (giving to the poor or handicapped - Matthew 6:34-35; Matthew 6:1-4). Giving “alms” is not tithing.
Lending without expectation of return to people having a tough time; to those down on their luck (Luke 6:34-35).
Labouring in Prayer (Matthew 6:6; Colossians 4:12).
Any Good Works That We Do, Whether Unto the Lord or Unto Man (1st Corinthians 3:11-15).
Relieving the Afflicted (Matthew 25:40-45; 1st John 3:17).
Praying (1st Thessalonians 5:17; Colossians 4:12)
Praying for others

If we provide a place of rest, a drink of water, a meal, money, clothes or anything to help a servant of Christ, the Lord will reward us for it. If you pass out a Gospel tract (if they are doctrinally accurate), Jesus will reward that. If you purchase the Gospel tracts (if they are doctrinally accurate), Jesus will reward you for that. If you donate money to help a Bible-believing church, you will receive a partial reward for any souls they lead to the Lord, or lives that are blessed by the preaching and teaching of the Word of God.

Mark 9:41, “For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.”

Praying, and praying for others is also work and will brings rewards.

We shall be rewarded for all our labours in Christ.  Preaching the word of God, buying Gospel tracts, handing out Gospel tracts, giving up our time to do this, staying up late labouring for Christ, whether that's through praying, preparing Gospel flyers, working on your ministry, helping people, will bring rewards.  Giving to the poor, helping someone in need, being kind to someone who is troubled will bring rewards.  Praying, and praying for others is labour and brings rewards.  Helping others who are preaching the Gospel will bring rewards.  Giving money to people who are preaching the Gospel, for instance, genuine missionaries will also bring rewards.

In this scripture, Paul is telling the church at Philippi, that they will receive rewards for the help they gave him by way of their gifts, so that he could preach the Gospel,

Philippians 4:15-19, “Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account. But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

So helping others ministries will bring rewards.

Remember, you don't have to win a soul to Christ just to get rewards, because many times, one reaps, and another sows, and both may rejoice together, because it is God that giveth the increase (1st Corinthians 3:6-8).  The planter and the harvester have both worked.  It's the Holy Spirit that makes the truth grow inside the person.

John 4:36, “And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.”

The Lord rewards our works, and our efforts - our labours.  Everyone can gather up rewards.

Someone might have a big fancy ministry, they might have a big massive ornate building, they may be giving lots of money - in comparison to others, to a Christian cause, but as Jesus says, it's our labour the God recognises.  Someone may be able to give more than you or me, but it might be a fraction of their overall wealth or time,

Mark 12:41-44, "And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.

And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.

And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living."

That poor widow may have even gave the least out of everyone there, but what did she really give?  So much more for her than anyone to the treasury in comparison to what everyone else has!  God is a good God!  Let's take comfort in our efforts, no matter how small they may appear to be paying off, all we can do is try, and God tells us He will reward us for our labours.

Here is a nice sermon by Jack Hyles for some more information on receiving rewards,

1st Corinthians 15:58, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
