Looking after our health

It can be easy as an active Christian to get discouraged in life.  The world can be at emnity with us and it can be lonely at times.  Sure, it can sound good on paper, fighting the good fight - but it's one thing watching the fight, or DOING the fight!

It can be easy to be discouraged, living in a heathen world, people cursing the Lords name, gossiping, blasphemous behaviour, sinful uncaring lifestyles, and the scorn one can receive when one speaks up to DEFEND God, to tell people about HOW TO GET SAVED, to try to live in a way which is seperate from non-believers and backslidden Christians, to try to live RIGHT, all the while being mis-understood.

For we do not hate those who do not believe, and those who blaspheme against God - God came to save everyone.  As the Lord said himself, even when they punished him, 'Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.'  And they then proceeded to part his raiments (clothing) and cast lots.  They did not even then, as He suffered, care that he cared, His caring heart, even then thinking of them, and not thinking of Himself, asking that our Father grant them mercy, even as they beat, tortured and killed Him.

Starting The Day Well

It's good to start the day in a good way.  It might sound simple, but it makes a BIG difference to the day.  If you don't - why not try starting the day with something simple and healthy?  You could have porridge (oatmeal) - just with water and not milk.  It's simple, healthy, nutritious, good for the body.  The battle we face IS spiritual, but we have to look after our body as much as we can, so that we have the MEANS whilst in this physical world, to contend for the faith, to keep ourselves able to be productive, to not ADD to our troubles by tempting health issues, for our testimony.  It makes a BIG difference to our day!

Personally, I start off with a banana, an apple, and one or two oatcakes.  I do some exercise.  I often cycle to work, which is a great way to get some exercise - but not always a possible option for everyone.  You could go for a small jog in the morning - say 20 minutes or so.  Or if not that, just go for a 30 minute walk in the morning, you'll feel much better!  I find this little bit of self-discipline in the morning sets me up for a good day where I can pray to have victory in other endeavours.  It gives some time to listen to God, think about what we have to do, it is working and gives us some rest.  I've already done well by preparing my body, my mind, I've already started to serve the Lord, and with His spirit we can go forth, hopefully at our best, or better than starting off with not doing anything!

'Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ?' - 1 Corinthians 6:15.  When we become born again by believing on Jesus as our saviour, the bible tells us we are joined with the Lord, 'But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit' - 1 Corinthians 6:17.  So it's good to look after our body.  We should be careful with what we do with our bodies as born again Christians.  We know we should look to avoid sinful behaviour with our bodies, things we already know, prositution, fornication and the like (1 Corinthians 6:15-20), but also how we look after our bodies makes a big difference, for we belong to Christ now, and our body is now HIS temple, with HIS Spirit living inside us, so, abusing our bodies, indeed our health, is sinful too.

'Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.' Proverbs 23:20-21

Everyone who's overeaten - riotous eaters - knows the drowsiness of feelings it creates.  Then to compensate for that drowsiness, we eat more, adding to the drowsiness.  This does not have to be!  And the best way to start to change it, is the morning - a new day, a new me!

Hey, looking after ourselves is another way way we can give honour to the Lord, and it's a great way to feel better about ourselves too, just to be rewarded to feel better!  We should glorify God in our body and our spirit! And what a great way to start the day as we intend to continue!

'For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.' Corinthians 6:20

Fasting, which is not eating for an extended period of time, could be for a day, could be longer, involves DENYING ourselves, denying ourselves of physical things - carnal things which are therefore replaced with SPIRITUAL things.  When it comes to fasting, and if you do decide to fast, it's important to remember to pray whilst doing it, because without prayer, it's not fasting, it's just simply dieting.  Fasting was often used by believers in Acts when making important decisions (Acts 14:23, Acts 13:2), and of course Jesus fasted in the desert before assuming his ministry.  It's a way to deny flesh, so to look to God for guidance and truth.

A Simple Breakfast and Some Simple Exercise in the Morning

You don't have to become a full time athlete - If you are so inclined you could engage in such activity if you wish.  It's certainly good to push our bodies, and Jesus meant for us whilst we are here to sweat, ' In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread..' Genesis 3:19. Certainly God wants us to work!!!  But it's also enough just to look after ourselves, so that we have the physical body and the mental health which comes with it, to keep living in the Spirit as much as we can, so as to give honour to the Lord.

A banana and an apple, or some oatcakes, or maybe porridge (oatmeal) and a simple 30 minute walk, or a 20 minute jog, or if it's possible - cycle to work (eliminating cost for public/private transport AND getting exercise whilst commuting - TWO for one!) is a great way to begin the day, and to begin where we want to continue!
