Romans - People who Reject God, But can Still be Saved

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened." Romans 1:18-21
In the above scripture, Paul is addressing the Christians at Rome, and he is advising that people who reject the existence of God have no excuse, because 'the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,' Rom.1:20a

What does this mean?  Well, it means that the fact that the world exists - where did it come from, is PROOF itself that it must have a creator.  We even know this today, that SOMETHING cannot come from NOTHING.

The First Law of Thermodynamics states,

The first law, also known as Law of Conservation of Energy, states that energy cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system. (Source).
Even today, the prevailing theory of the creation of the universe is the 'Big Bang', that it all just appeared from 'nothing'.  Only a dishonest man would rule out that it all came from SOMETHING - a CREATOR, that is, as Romans 1:20 says, the 'invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen'!

What does God to do those who Reject that God is Manifest

Given that the evidence of a creator - of God is clearly seen, people have no excuse in not believing in God.  Therefore, whether someone has been spoken to about God, or not, everyone is guilty if they do not believe in God.  They are REJECTING the truth, because it's clear even from observing the world, the universe and so forth.

Therefore, God gives them over to 'uncleanness'. An uncleaness in minds, and bodies;
"Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen." Romans 1:24-25
What sort of things do people do, who reject the obvious truth the from creation of the world, and all that's in it, that it comes comes from SOMETHING, that therefore, God exists?
"For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." Romans 1:26-32
When someone categorically rejects the truth that God exists, not even 'on the fence' on the subject - due to the evidence of the creation of the world and all that is in it, then they are given over to, as the above scripture lists - a mind and body which embraces such things as, homosexuality, fornication, covetousness, envy, murder, debate, deceit, hate, disobedience, lack of mercy, and so forth.

We can see this in INDIVIDUALS.  But also, we are seeing it more in more in a SOCIETY which rejects God, such as in especially many Western societies, we are seeing this reflected in the values and behaviour of SOCIETY.  It's hard to find a decent person with morals and values these days! And it's hard to find within society, laws which promote decent sensible thinking!  For instance, abortion is legal, which really, can be said to be legalized murder of an innocent, and it's done without mercy.  It's a truth that there are so called 'primitive' tribes in places such as Africa, who have more respect for people, values and the sanctity of human life (abortion), than we, not just often as individuals do, but as a SOCIETY does also!

What of Those Who Judge Others?

"Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things." 2 Romans 2:1
Here, Paul makes it clear.  Every man, woman, every person is guilty.  When we judge others, we are condemning ourselves, for every man does the same things, that is, it is an exercise in hypocrisy.

Can You be Saved by the Law (the 10 Commandments) or by Just Not Knowing the Law?

"For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;" 2 Romans 12
Paul makes it clear that people - Jews who know the Law (the 10 commandments) are just as guilty as people who don't know the law, 'For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:' 2 Rom. 14.  Paul makes it clear that non-Jews (Gentiles) have the 10 commandments written into their heart, 'which shew the work of the law written in their hearts,' 2 Rom. 15a.  How many people do you know - and yourself and myself included, who've never heard a sermon, or read the Bible, know in our hearts that it's wrong to steal, hurt, kill, slander, gossip etc?  We all do!  So for some, the law is written on paper, but for others, it's written on their hearts; their conscience.

So Jews are judged by the law because they know the law.  And non-Jews are judged because the law is written onto their heart from birth, and how many people really follow their conscience?  People know by NATURE not to steal, lie, gossip, slander and so forth, yet people ignore, or go against their conscience, and do it anyway!
"...but the doers of the law shall be justified." Romans 2:13b
Only the DOERS of the law are justified, and none of us have done everything right, ALL the TIME!  So, none of us, religious people, or non religious people, are justified!

The Religious Person is no Better than the Heathen

"What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:  there is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God." Romans 3:9-11
Therefore, as Jews who know the Law, still break the law, they are as guilty as a heathen who doesn't know the law, because heathens know in their heart what's right and wrong, and still do wrong anyway.  A religious person can try their best to do the BEST THEY CAN.  A non-religious individual can be a really sweet, nice person, but it's not enough.  No matter how religious, or how nice you are, EVERYONE goes against their conscience (the Gentile) or the Law (Jew) at some point.

We cannot be justified by works!

Salvation is by Faith of Jesus Christ!

"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: ... to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus."  Romans 3:21-24,26
Paul makes it clear, that NO ONE can be justified by works, because everyone falls short of a 100% track record of doing everything right!  The sweet lady at work, the sweet lady who lives down the road, the really nice friendly man who gives to the poor, the highly religious person who never drinks or cusses - no matter how NICE someone is, EVERYONE slips up at some point, so NO ONE can be justified by doing good things.

What is a nice person?  Show me a nice person and I will show you someone NICER!  We are all sinners really, when you think about it.  Everyone has sinned, so therefore, as Paul says, we cannot justify ourselves, we can ONLY be justified in God's eyes by believing on Jesus, His only Begotten Son, who, having lived a perfect life, God in the flesh, took the burden of our sins upon Himself, paying for them by sacrificing Himself on the cross for us, and rose from the dead.  It is through our FAITH in Jesus, that we are righteous in God's eyes, and faith alone.  It's our get out clause!
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: by whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God." Romans 5:1-2

  1. People who REJECT the truth that there IS a God, are then given over to a reprobate mind.  This can even be seen in societies that reject God, for instance, in modern Western society, abortion is acceptable and promoted, along with sexual deviance.  They reject their conscience, so God allows them to do this .
  2. People who try to justify themselves by the 10 commandments (Jews, religious people), fail just as much people who try to live by conscience.  Everyone knows in their heart that stealing, slander, gossip, greed etc are wrong, but, people do it anyway. Religious people always fall short of being perfect.  No one can be justified by good deeds, religious or conscience driven.
  3. The way to be justified in God's sight is by faith.  By realizing that we are no better, we all fail at being good at all times, that is, we all commit sins, we are instead justified by believing that Jesus Christ died for our sins and rose again; paying for our sins and purchasing our salvation. We are justified by believing in Jesus, the only Begotten Son of God: God in the flesh.
  4. There is nothing in the Bible to say when a person can NEVER be saved.  Even someone who doesn't believe in God can change their minds.  A person who does believe in God but thinks their works are good enough can change their minds too.  This is called repenting, in the Biblical sense, the word is metanoia, which literally means, a change of mind.
  5. A person who does not believe, either in God, or in their own lack of righteousness, can still have this change of mind, β€œAnd they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.” Romans 11:23

A vile mind is the inevitable end result for people who reject that God exists, they give fully into their own wants and desires, caring not for their conscience any more..  Religious people, and general do-gooders can never cut it to make it into Heaven.  The only way is by faith.  To believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and that He rose again from the dead, as our only way to Heaven.

God wants everyone to accept His gift, not just some.

β€œFor God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
"that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10.
